What an amazing opportunity it was to have witnessed these fleeting moments in Washington, D.C., with my friends this past weekend!
This year’s Cherry Blossom Festival comes with bittersweet feelings, as it marks one of the final displays of the current generation of cherry trees. Unfortunately, due to rising sea levels, the National Parks Service has reported that around 300 cherry trees will be removed following the conclusion of this year’s festivities. This is to make way for the critical repairs of a crumbling and sinking sea wall. While standing in the very spot in which I took this photo, I witnessed firsthand how the rising tides are flooding the Tidal Basin.
These photographs not only capture the remarkable beauty of the blossoms but also serve as a reminder of just how fragile nature can be. It is a bittersweet farewell to the trees that have stood for decades and a very hopeful welcome to the new trees that will soon take their place. The National Parks Service reports that once the necessary alterations have been made to the sea wall, over 400 new cherry trees will take root.
I am immensely grateful to have captured this peaceful moment in time - a testament to the inevitable changes of life.
